Zephaniah 3

Woe to Jerusalem and the Nations

3 Woe to her who is ^(A)rebellious and ^(B)defiled,
The ^(C)oppressive city!
²She ^(D)obeyed no voice,
She ^(E)accepted no discipline.
She did not ^(F)trust in the Lord,
She did not ^(G)approach her God.
³Her ^(H)leaders within her are roaring lions,
Her judges are ^(I)wolves at evening;
They have no bones to gnaw in the morning.
⁴Her prophets are ^(J)insolent, treacherous men;
Her ^(K)priests have profaned the sanctuary.
They have done violence to the Law.
⁵The Lord is ^(L)righteous ^(M)within her;
He will ^(N)do no injustice.
^(O)Every morning He brings His justice to light;
He ^[a]does not fail.
But the ^[b]criminal ^(P)knows no shame.
⁶“I have eliminated nations;
Their corner towers are deserted.
I have ^(Q)laid waste their streets,
With no one passing by;
Their ^(R)cities have been laid waste,
Without a person, ^(S)without an inhabitant.
⁷I said, ‘You will certainly revere Me,
You will ^(T)accept discipline.’
So her dwelling will ^(U)not be eliminated
In accordance with everything that I have stipulated for her.
Instead, they were eager to ^(V)corrupt all their deeds.

⁸“Therefore ^(W)wait for Me,” declares the Lord,
“For the day when I rise up as a witness.
Indeed, My decision is to ^(X)gather nations,
To assemble kingdoms,
To pour out on them My indignation,
All My burning anger;
For ^(Y)all the earth will be devoured
By the fire of My zeal.
⁹For then I will ^[c]restore to the peoples ^(Z)pure lips,
So that all of them may ^(AA)call on the name of the Lord,
To serve Him ^[d]shoulder to shoulder.
¹⁰From beyond the rivers of ^(AB)Ethiopia
My worshipers, ^[e]My dispersed ones,
Will ^(AC)bring My offerings.
¹¹On that day you will ^(AD)feel no shame
Because of all your deeds
By which you have rebelled against Me;
For then I will remove from your midst
Your ^(AE)proud, arrogant ones,
And you will never again be haughty
On My ^(AF)holy mountain.

A Remnant of Israel

¹²But I will leave among you
A ^(AG)humble and lowly people,
And they will ^(AH)take refuge in the name of the Lord.
¹³The ^(AI)remnant of Israel will ^(AJ)do no wrong
And ^(AK)tell no lies,
Nor will a deceitful tongue
Be found in their mouths;
For they will ^(AL)feed and lie down
With no one to frighten them.”

¹⁴Shout for joy, daughter of Zion!
^(AM)Shout in triumph, Israel!
Rejoice and triumph with all your heart,
Daughter of Jerusalem!
¹⁵The Lord has taken away ^(AN)His judgments against you,
He has cleared away your enemies.
The King of Israel, the Lord, is ^(AO)in your midst;
You will no longer ^(AP)fear disaster.
¹⁶^(AQ)On that day it will be said to Jerusalem:
“^(AR)Do not be afraid, Zion;
^(AS)Do not let your hands fall limp.
¹⁷The Lord your God is ^(AT)in your midst,
A ^[f]^(AU)victorious warrior.
He will ^(AV)rejoice over you with joy,
He will ^[g]be quiet in His love,
He will rejoice over you with shouts of joy.
¹⁸I will gather those who are ^(AW)worried about the appointed feasts—
They ^[h]came from you, Zion;
The disgrace of exile is a burden on ^[i]them.
¹⁹Behold, I am going to deal at that time
With all your ^(AX)oppressors;
I will save ^(AY)those who limp
And gather the scattered,
And I will turn their ^(AZ)shame into ^(BA)praise and fame
In all the earth.
²⁰At that time I will ^(BB)bring you in,
Even at the time when I gather you together;
Indeed, I will make you ^(BC)famous and praiseworthy
Among all the peoples of the earth,
When I ^(BD)restore your fortunes before your eyes,”
Says the Lord.

Hidden Treasure

⁴⁴“^(A)The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid again; and from ^[a]joy over it he goes and ^(B)sells everything that he has, and buys that field.

A Costly Pearl

⁴⁵“Again, ^(C)the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking fine pearls, ⁴⁶and upon finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold everything that he had and bought it.

A Dragnet

⁴⁷“Again, ^(D)the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet that was cast into the sea and gathered fish of every kind; ⁴⁸and when it was filled, they pulled it up on the beach; and they sat down and gathered the good fish into containers, but the bad they threw away. ⁴⁹So it will be at ^(E)the ^[b]end of the age: the angels will come forth and remove the wicked from among the righteous, ⁵⁰and they ^(F)will throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place ^(G)there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

⁵¹“Have you understood all these things?” They *said to Him, “Yes.” ⁵²And ^[c]Jesus said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has become a disciple of the kingdom of heaven is like a head of a household, who brings out of his treasure new things and old.”

Jesus Revisits Nazareth

⁵³^(H)When Jesus had finished these parables, He departed from there. ⁵⁴And ^(I)He came to ^[d]His hometown and ^(J)began teaching them in their synagogue, with the result that ^(K)they were astonished, and said, “Where did this man acquire this wisdom and these ^[e]miraculous powers? ⁵⁵Is this not the carpenter’s son? Is ^(L)His mother not called Mary, and His ^(M)brothers, James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas? ⁵⁶And ^(N)His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this man acquire all these things?” ⁵⁷And they took ^(O)offense at Him. But Jesus said to them, “^(P)A prophet is not dishonored except in his ^[f]hometown and in his own household.” ⁵⁸And He did not do many ^[g]miracles there because of their unbelief.

God Is Awesome

1 The ^(A)pronouncement of ^(B)Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite:

²A ^(C)jealous and avenging God is the Lord;
The Lord is ^(D)avenging and ^[a]wrathful.
The Lord takes ^(E)vengeance on His adversaries,
And He reserves wrath for His enemies.
³The Lord is ^(F)slow to anger and great in power,
And the Lord will by no means leave the guilty unpunished.
In the ^(G)gale and the storm is His way,
And ^(H)clouds are the dust beneath His feet.
⁴He ^(I)rebukes the sea and dries it up;
He dries up all the rivers.
^(J)Bashan and Carmel wither,
The blossoms of Lebanon wither.
⁵Mountains ^(K)quake because of Him,
And the hills ^(L)come apart;
Indeed the earth is ^(M)upheaved by His presence,
The ^(N)world and all the inhabitants in it.
⁶^(O)Who can stand before His indignation?
Who can endure the ^(P)burning of His anger?
His ^(Q)wrath gushes forth like fire,
And the ^(R)rocks are broken up by Him.
⁷The Lord is ^(S)good,
A stronghold in the day of trouble,
And ^(T)He knows those who take refuge in Him.
⁸But with an ^(U)overflowing flood
He will make a complete end of ^[b]its site,
And will pursue His enemies into ^(V)darkness.

⁹Whatever you ^(W)devise against the Lord,
He will make a ^(X)complete end of it.
Distress will not rise up twice.
¹⁰Like tangled ^(Y)thorns,
And like those who are ^(Z)drunken with their drink,
They are ^(AA)consumed
Like stubble completely dried up.
¹¹From you has gone out
One who ^(AB)plotted evil against the Lord,
A ^[c]^(AC)wicked counselor.

¹²This is what the Lord says:

“Though they are at full strength and so they are many,
So also they will be ^(AD)cut off and pass away.
Though I have afflicted you,
I will afflict you ^(AE)no longer.
¹³So now, I will ^(AF)break his yoke from upon you,
And I will tear your shackles to pieces.”

¹⁴The Lord has issued a command concerning ^[d]you:
“^[e]Your name will ^(AG)no longer be perpetuated.
I will eliminate the ^(AH)carved image and the cast metal image
From the house of your gods.
I will prepare your ^(AI)grave,
For you are contemptible.”

¹⁵^[f]Behold, ^(AJ)on the mountains, the feet of him who brings good news,
Who announces peace!
^(AK)Celebrate your feasts, Judah,
Pay your vows.
For ^(AL)never again will the ^[g]wicked one pass through you;
He is ^(AM)eliminated completely.

Servants of Christ

4 This is the way any person is to regard us: as ^(A)servants of Christ and ^(B)stewards of ^(C)the mysteries of God. ²In this case, moreover, it is required ^[a]of stewards that one be found trustworthy. ³But to me it is an insignificant matter that I would be examined by you, or by any human ^[b]court; in fact, I do not even examine myself. ⁴For I ^(D)am not aware of anything against myself; however I am not ^(E)vindicated by this, but the one who examines me is the Lord. ⁵Therefore ^(F)do not go on ^[c]passing judgment before ^[d]the time, but wait ^(G)until the Lord comes, who will both ^(H)bring to light the things hidden in the darkness and disclose the motives of human hearts; and then ^(I)praise will come to each person from God.

⁶Now these things, brothers and sisters, I have figuratively applied to myself and Apollos on your account, so that in us you may learn not to exceed ^(J)what is written, so that no one of you will ^(K)become ^[e]arrogant ^(L)in behalf of one against the other. ⁷For who considers you as superior? ^(M)What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?

⁸You are ^(N)already filled, you have already become rich, you have become kings without us; and indeed, I wish that you had become kings so that we also might reign with you! ⁹For I think, God has exhibited us, the apostles, last of all as men ^(O)condemned to death, because we ^(P)have become a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to mankind. ¹⁰We are ^(Q)fools on account of Christ, but ^(R)you are prudent in Christ! ^(S)We are weak, but you are strong! You are distinguished, but we are without honor! ¹¹Up to this present hour we are both ^(T)hungry and thirsty, and are poorly clothed and roughly treated and homeless; ¹²and we labor, ^(U)working with our own hands; when we are ^(V)verbally abused, we bless; when we are ^(W)persecuted, we endure it; ¹³when we are slandered, we ^[f]reply as friends; we have ^(X)become as the scum of the world, the dregs of all things, even until now.

¹⁴I do not write these things to ^(Y)shame you, but to admonish you as my beloved ^(Z)children. ¹⁵For if you were to have countless ^(AA)tutors in Christ, yet you would not have many fathers, for in ^(AB)Christ Jesus I ^(AC)became your father through the ^(AD)gospel. ¹⁶Therefore I urge you, be ^(AE)imitators of me. ¹⁷For this reason I ^(AF)have sent to you ^(AG)Timothy, who is my ^(AH)beloved and faithful child in the Lord, and he will remind you of my ways which are in Christ, ^(AI)just as I teach everywhere in every church.
